Aylesbury Soap Box Derby 2018
June 17, 2018
It's Sunday 17th June 2018. I've known about the Aylesbury Soap Box Derby for several years and it has become a highlight in the Aylesbury calendar. I love the event; it brings out families, it showcases local ingenuity and highlights just how fun the outside can be to kids!
The cars are basic, but I can tell the dads, sons, mothers, daughters and all those involved in creating them were very proud of their creation.
For me, it's just a fun excuse to get out my SLRs and shoot something for fun; no expectations or clients to please, just for my own enjoyment.
I was hoping to see more familiar faces this year (I kept bumping into friends last year), but alas other than a young man who I've seen grow up to be a success story and another photographer I know I barely spoke to another soul.
I moved around to find a a good spot to shoot. From previous experience, the best moment is the push off at the start, so I moved a little further down to get that shot and when the cars tackle the first bend. Once I found that location, I didn't move and got into a shoot and tag rhythm.
I have to applaud Aylesbury Town Council to have the vision to put on an event like this; it may be free to the public, but it does cost local government to put on these events!
