Dance Photography in Black and White
Dance photography has been something on my list of subjects for a long time. In the past I have found good dancers, but when I put them in a photography studio environment they do not quite deliver the confidence and performance I seek. A dancer must be able to take minor direction and be able to free flow with sometimes abstract instructions. I struggled to find a dancer like this until yesterday when I found two; Victoria and Mel. I wish to start with Victoria.
Victoria and I do not know each other well but through a mutual friend we are familiar with each other’s work. I had never seen Victoria dance before so I was not sure what to expect. We certainly had not worked together in a professional capacity. I showed her a few examples of work I liked and we went straight into the shoot due to my very limited time with her and Mel.
Victoria went after Mel so she had some insight as to what I was after in the dance. She went straight into a flowing and fluid improvised routine that was incredible. Without looking at the back of my Nikon I could tell I caught some magic.

Portrait photography is very special to me. Pow Pow Pictures has spoken to many folks and I feel has made a real connection with those we have photographed. As well as the laughs there are small moments of openness that is shared. Maybe it is a personal story, or a moment that happened on holiday.
Anyway, these photos that I have chosen mean a lot to me because of the stories behind the faces.

Just a quick post to show you guys a young model with very little photo shoot experience but managed to take direction very well. What this model lacks in experience she makes up for with a real presence on camera.
She had very little preparation time to be ready for the camera. After having her hair professional made up (which was the nature of the shoot) she was ready to go.

I saw a photo frame a few years ago at a photography seminar which had 9 photos laid out quite simply. I like it because it was simply, classic and timeless. So I’ve always wanted replicate something like that for a wedding. But that is tricky to do because I needed a black ground, one key light and for all the guests to cooperate as most of them were not expecting a studio shoot. However, with a bit of lateral thinking I pulled it off. I had to rush these shots because the first dance was just about to start. But I think we pulled it off.

AT LAST! With over one hundred weddings covered I never managed to get THIS layout done. I have had this idea for over a year but I needed the perfect conditions, good lighting and the time to get to the shots I wanted.
This photo was compiled at Emma and Mark Benson’s wedding a few weeks ago. Just as they had finished getting ready in the morning I grabbed each girl and positioned them next to the window. The room was generally quite dark but that also meant it would give me great contrast with the natural light that was coming in.
I hope you like it. I have wanted to do this for ages. Much thanks to the Emma and the Bridesmaids for helping me do this. x

Last week, we had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful mum and daughter. The mum, Louise and young Amelie were wonderful together. Amelie had not long been awake from her sleep so she took a few minutes adjusting to the studio, but that’s perfectly normal. After the first few shots had been taken, they soon relaxed into it.
We’re happy to share these portrait photos with you.
All photos were taken with a Nikon D3 and 24-70mm f/2.8 lens.

Whitney Houston famously sung “Children are our future” and she is absolutely correct, what is also true is they become young adults all too quickly and before you know it all you will have are memories and hopefully a few photos. But how many good photos do you actually have?

Every wedding that is booked with us here at Pow Pow Pictures will also get a Pre Wedding Photo session as part of their wedding photography package. This is of course optional but we encourage our clients to come into the studio and have some intimate photos taken of them before the big day.
Here are just a few of the Pre Wedding Shoots we did in 2011.
We make the sessions deliberately informal so the couples relax, goof off and have a good time. The feedback we get is always very positive. We are very excited to photograph new couples in 2012.
